On February 4, 1988 a strange circle measuring over a meter and a half in diameter, covered in fungi, was found at a private residence located across from the Miguel Lillo Park of the city of Necochea. The grass within the circle was much darker and overgrown than usual.

Mr. Basilio Lichowski, 63, noticed the strange circle in his summer home. “The first thing that surprised me was to see toadstools at this time of the year. Nothing like it had ever happened before, and I tore one out to show my wife, who pointed out how strange it all was.”

Although predictions about the future are fun to read, their record for accuracy is generally pretty poor.

Last week we asked readers for their predictions of life in 100 years time. Inspired by ten 100-year predictions made by American civil engineer John Elfreth Watkins in 1900, many of you wrote in with your vision of the world in 2112.

But algae farming is also on the way for renewable energy, and maybe even for growth of feedstock (raw materials) or resource extraction via GM seaweed or algae.

PT: Good chance. According to Dennis Bushnell, chief scientist at the Nasa Langley Research Center, saltwater algae that's been genetically modified to absorb more nitrogen from the air than conventional algae could free up to 68% of the fresh water that is now tied up in conventional agriculture. About Those Missing Roswell Files

Nick Redfern says that the issue of the missing Roswell files is undeniably interesting and deeply worthy of further study, scrutiny, and investigation.

On July 28, 1995, the General Accounting Office's report on the Roswell affair surfaced from its National Security and International Affairs Division. And although the GAO's report did not provide any smoking-guns - or, rather, any old B&W photos of dead bodies and wreckage at the crash-site on the Foster Ranch, New Mexico - it did provide something interesting and controversial. And it's something that has been misinterpreted for years.

During the course of their search for records to try and better understand what had taken place at Roswell in early July 1947, the GAO learned that the entire outgoing messages from Roswell Army Air Field generated during the period that the event occurred were missing, and under circumstances that could not be fully determined and proved.

This, inevitably and very understandably, led certain Roswell researchers to proclaim that this was evidence of a significant event of UFO proportions having occurred, and which certain elements of officialdom were determined to keep forever hidden from the populace, the media, and the UFO research community - and possibly, even, from anyone else in government who might dare to come looking, such as investigators of the GAO.

And, maybe, that's precisely what happened.

How to Use the Abramelin Squares

The Book of the Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage is one of the best-known, but seldom-used magical grimoires. The book describes an elaborate ritual whose purpose is to obtain the "knowledge and conversation" of the magician's "Holy Guardian Angel." During the period of the work, which lasts six months, the magician must pray daily before sunrise and again at sunset. Also, during this preparatory phase, there are many restrictions: chastity must be observed, alcoholic beverages refused, and the magician must conduct his business with scrupulous fairness. After the preparatory phase has been successfully completed, the magician's guardian angel will appear to reveal to the magician magical secrets.

The practical magic of Abramelin centers around a set of magic word squares. By writing the squares and calling upon the spirits responsible for them, the magician is promised the capability to find buried treasure, to cast love charms, to have magical flight, and to become invisible, among other things. However, according to Abramelin, only a magician who has obtained the knowledge and conversation of his Holy Guardian Angel can command the spirits.

However, this claim is illogical on its face. The knowledge and conversation of the magician's Holy Guardian Angel is not required to command spirits in other grimoires. In fact, the squares can be used by anyone at anytime without completing the six-month ritual described in The Book of Abramelin. Follow these five steps, to use the Abramelin squares.

1) Select the magic word square that best matches your need or desire.

2) Know the class of spirits responsible for the square. The angels give you pleasant effects, the evil spirits give you unpleasant effects, and the familiars give you precisely what you ask of them.

3) Write the magic word square.

4) Touch the square and call upon the spirit responsible (in the proper quarter if it is one of the Cardinal spirits). If you desire a more specific effect, call upon the subordinate spirit whose name signifies the way in which you wish the results to manifest. Experience has shown that the spirits need to be called out loud.

5) Tell the spirit what you want from it, and then perform any other actions needed as described in the book.

Be sure you know which spirit is responsible for the square's effect. The effects manifested by the "evil spirits" seem to always work through some upsetting means. The ones manifested by the Cardinals (Oriens, Paimon, Amaymon, and Ariton) seem to manifest by "natural" means. Although the squares do not make things pop out of the blue onto your dining room table, they will get you what you want if you call the spirits that make them work.

Confessions of a Crop Circle Maker

While some crop circles may be paranormal, not all of them are. Paranormal researcher Caryn Anscomb interviewed a crop circle maker named John Lundberg. She began by asking him how he first got interested in crop circles.

... John: I first became aware of the circles like most of the UK population when there was an upsurge in media coverage here in the late 80s. It was difficult to pick up a paper or turn on the TV news without seeing a reference to the ‘mysterious crop circles’. It’s also when I discovered The Cerealogist magazine and started to read about the various theories put forward to explain the authorship of the circles. Around this time I also met up with a fellow artist called Rod Dickinson who also had an interest in the circles. We used to sit up long into the night talking about them and wondering how we could become involved in the crop circle phenomenon. Back then we were just as much in the dark as to their origin as everyone else - except whoever or whatever was making them of course. So eventually we decided that we wanted to contribute to the phenomenon and ventured out into the fields in the early 90s to create one, then many crop circles. It really was a revelation to me, seeing the disconnect between what we were doing – flattening cereal crop with planks of wood – and what our works audience was perceiving, which could be anything from physiological and psychological effects brought on by visiting the circles, to electronic equipment failures or malfunctions, alleged curative powers, or the inverse, reports of people feeling nauseous in our creations. I think this was the hook that pulled us deeper into the phenomenon, all of the narratives that were attached to our work, the mythology and folklore that was built up around it. It can be very intoxicating and exciting for an artist. We weren’t pushing paint around on a canvas that sat in a sterile gallery environment; we were quite literally forming and shaping the culture that surrounded us. The circles we created could be seen as virulent mind viruses or memes that traveled right around the world permeating both underground and popular culture. I have to say that when Rod and I were first creating circles, we didn’t have a clear idea of the origin of the other circles out there in fields, we were completely open about who or what were the authors. Another great case from The Survival Top 40 is the James Leininger reincarnation case. This story is sufficiently well known that I don't think I need to summarize it; anyway, Miles Edward Allen's excellent summary is readily available at this link (PDF).

Besides the strongly evidential value of James' statements about the plane he piloted, the ship he flew from, the names of his fallen comrades, etc., there are three aspects of the case that strike me as particularly interesting.

First, little James showed strong emotions when remembering his past life as a pilot. The whole episode began with James' nightmares, in which he struggled and screamed in bed. Whatever he was experiencing was obviously vivid and terrifying. Moreover, he showed flare-ups of righteous indignation that would seem more appropriate for a WWII flier than a two-year-old. As Miles Edward Allen recounts, when James identified his ship as the Natoma, his father replied that the name sounded Japanese. "Little James grew indignant and said no. It was American!" It's certainly credible that a patriotic serviceman would have that reaction; after all, it was the Japanese who shot him down. James, on the other hand, was probably too young to know or care about the Japanese through his own personal experience. Read more

Dowsers who claim to be able to locate archaeological features from maps are invited to enter a specially devised competition. Most challenges issued by paranormal "skeptics" are rigged in favor of the skeptic, but this one seems as if it might be fair.

Mention the word dowsing and most people will think of a chap in muddy wellies trudging around a farm with a stick, looking for a good place to sink a borehole, or a fey type in a tie-dye T-shirt wafting about looking for mystical ley lines.

For centuries there have been believers in dowsing, a form of divination traditionally used to locate groundwater sources, and argument rages in the archaeological community about whether dowsers, armed with no more than a bit of bent copper wire and the power of faith, can also locate long-vanished Roman roads, Bronze Age barrows or prehistoric rock carvings.

However, even believers in the muddy wellies type of dowsing often have grave doubts about map dowsers, who claim to be able to locate such features just by holding a pendulum over a Google Earth satellite view taken from miles above a site. The debate has rumbled on through many archaeology forums, with believers and sceptics equally passionately engaged.

Inexplicata contributing editor Manuel Carballal describes one of his most perilous brushes with the unknown, an encounter with Haitian voodoo.

The scene could have been derived from any suspense film. Manuel Delgado instinctively held on tightly to his television camera as we clutched our machetes. Our vehicle was being surrounded by a dozen ebony-skinned Haitians. The blancs, as they derisively call Europeans, are not welcome in Haiti and we had been warned that under no circumstances should we venture into the shanty towns outside Port-au-Prince where, we were told, "there exists a 90 per cent chance of being mugged." We ignored this sage advice, of course.

After endless minutes of waiting, our guide allowed us to emerge from the car. Monsieur Balaguer, an important bokor -- a voodoo high priest -- would allow us to visit his hounfor or temple. The hounfor consisted in a humble wooden shack whose center contained the peristyle, the indispensable central column of every voodoo ritual, by means of which the gods or loas descend to earth. A filthy light bulb and seven candles enabled us to see the disquieting form of Monsieur Balaguer, a tall man with sparkling black eyes, who covered his head with a Stetson.

While our guide stated all the arguments at his disposal in order to have Monsieur Balaguer allow us to film his "she-devil" and his "zombie", we were startled by a sudden blackout. The dirty light bulb was extinguished, plunging us into the shadows, illuminated only by the seven candles around the peristyle. Balaguer greeted his "she-devil" -- supposedly located behind a mysterious metal door -- by rapping on it a few times. From the other side, "something" responded with brutal blows against the door, causing the entire temple to shake. Suddenly we were told that the bokor had to consult the loas: we looked on as Monsieur Balaguer fell int a sort of trance, being "ridden" or possessed by Bravo, one of the loas who shares the lordship over death and cemeteries with Baron Samedi and Baron La Croix. Subjecting us to a sort of "trial," exchanging a curious combinations of handshakes to which we instinctively responded to, Balaguer drank rum through an ear as he smoked a cigarette through one nostril.

The fact of the matter is that in Haiti, Western patterns of logic become fragile in the face of the unpredictable, incomprehensible and irrational voodoo cult -- vodú in the native tongue -- which originates from the Fon language of Dahomey, meaning "deity" or "spirit." This story is actually rather unusual. As discussed in my post Spectrophilia: Sex with Ghosts, stories about sex between spirits and humans are not new, but this is the first I've heard of someone claiming to have witnessed spirits having sex with each other.

How to Create a Familiar Spirit

Creating a familiar spirit is a more advanced technique for creating a spirit servant than I wrote about in my post Creat a Spirit Servant with Your Own Psychic Energy. A familiar spirit is more sentient and long-lasting that a psi-ball spirit servant and should be able to handle more complex tasks. However, creating a familiar spirit is not that much more complicated than creating a psi-ball spirit servant.

The first step is to decide on a name for the familiar spirit. You can use any name you like, but a name based on the familiar spirit's purpose seems to work best. Some examples of this type of name might be Moneybringer, Guardian, or Healall.

Then, use the name to come up with a sigil that binds the familiar spirit. My own preference is to use a planetary kamea or a sigil wheel to make sigils, but any method of producing a sigil will work.

The next step is to create some sort of physical object with which to contain the familiar spirit when it is not out doing work. This object will also serve as the physical receptacle of libations. You can get as simple or creative as you'd like. I just take a small disk of wood, carve the sigil and name onto the disk, paint it, and generally try to make it look "magical."

The next step is to decide what you want your familiar spirit to "look" like, even though it will only exist on the astral. I just draw something simple to aid my visualization during the "incubation" period. If you're a fairly good artist, you could even take your drawing, put it in a frame, and use that to contain the familiar spirit instead of a wooden disk. If you decide to do this, write the name underneath the drawing and draw the sigil on the back. You won't be able to see the sigil, so make another copy to use when you summon your familiar spirit.

Next, design a ritual for creating the familiar spirit within the disk or depiction of it. Any opening ceremony that you use for spell work or summoning probably can be used this, too. When you are ready to begin creating the familiar spirit, trace its sigil in the air in front of you while pronouncing its name three times. Visualize the appearance of the entity or stare at its deptiction if you prefer. Continue with the visualization for about fifteen minutes. You may also want to pour on it libations of milk, egg whites, or blood. If you begin to lose focus during visualization, repeat the sigil tracing and name pronounciation part of the ritual and keep going.

Repeat this procedure daily until you can feel that the entity is becoming more and more real on the astral level. The initial feeding and preparation is called an incubation period. Incubating your familiar spirit gives you more of a window for error and removes a lot of pressure to do everything exactly right on the first try. To start with, allow a week to incubate your familiar spirit before giving it a task.

If you banish before magical work, make sure to remove the disk or depiction from the room before banishing during the incubation period. You will banish the developing familiar spirit. After sending it out on a task, however, using a banishing ceremony can act to give it a little push in case it wants to hang around instead of doing work.

After the incubation period, you can command the familiar spirit to do a task for you. Below is a sample of what you might say the time of summoning. This charge to the spirit has not been handed down by King Solomon, Merlin, or anyone like that, so feel free to revise the wording if you need to. You may want to point a ritual dagger or wand at the disk or depiction for emphasis:

Hear me now _____________! I, who created you from the astral substance, charge you to rise from the disk/depiction bearing your sigil and name. I, who created you on the astral plane for the sole purpose of working my will upon this plane, command you now to hear and fulfill this task. I, who feed and fuel your very existence, command you to ________________. Fulfilling this and all tasks I give you is your duty and sole justification for having been created. Obey now with full cooperation and faithfully serve your lord/lady who created you and who will destroy you if you are disobedient.

The task should be as simply and as clearly stated as possible - ideally a short, declarative sentence. This charge is more heavy-handed than what I would recommend using for an independent spirit that you didn't create yourself. However, this spirit is yours and was created to do your will. It's also very simple-minded, so the strong, direct approach is needed.

Come up with a "calling back" ritual to use once the task is done. That's normally when you should feed your familiar spirit. If you send it out on long tasks such as protection of another person or menacing, be sure to call it back at least once a week to feed it. If your familiar spirit fails consistently to complete tasks, make good on the threat to destroy it by burning the disk or depiction and thoroughly banishing it.

Taking a more Fortean angle to all this, for most of us the serious treatment of any idea that there might be humanoid monstrosities lurking within cavernous corridors beneath the Earth’s surface is little more than lunacy. In many regards, I have to agree that, while I enjoy the films and other fictional portrayals that delve into the depths of this subject, we cannot take very literally the idea that subterranean non-humans exist. A YouTube video has surfaced claiming to debunk the flashlight phenomenon.

... The host on the "Viper Paranormal" YouTube video offered another explanation. In the video, he said the flashlight turning on and off is basically a short circuit that occurs at random. He said that many ghosthunters unscrew the backs of their flashlights to the point where the flashlight is teetering between staying on or off, then set it down to ask questions. He compares the effect to lights flickering on and off in a home.

"You're not getting enough voltage to that light and for a split second that light has no power. Well, it's the exact same thing with this flashlight. When this thing is unscrewed, it's teeter-tottering between having a connection. And basically you've got a short circuit, so sometimes this light's going to come on, and sometimes it's going to be off," said Mike St. Clair, the host of the Viper Paranormal YouTube series.

Theoretically, then, any vibration could cause the connection to be completed and the light to turn on.

This explanation would only satisfy the extremely gullible, or maybe someone who has never watched Ghost Hunters. On the show, the flashlight sits unlit and then slowly comes on in response to a question. Then it is turned off slowly at the request of an investigator. The flashlight does not flicker on and off.

This is quite typical of the paranormal "debunking" I've read: It either doesn't debunk what actually happens on the show or outright lies about what happens. None of us outsiders can know whether the show's producers and participants are honest, of course, Assuming no chicanery, however, this explanation doesn't debunk the flashlight phenomenon. It has been filmed walking along a creek bank (and although controversial, has been authenticated by a number of research institutes as the real thing), has had hair and feces samples collected, has had voice analyzation done to it's calls only proving the sounds are coming from no known identified animal, and to top all of this off, the county of Skamania in the state of Washington, has a law on the books forbidding anyone from killing it! Yet orthodox science says that this beast cannot possibly exist because there has been no actual body to examine. However, if this was a civil trial to prove the existence of this subject before a court of law, a verdict of existence would have come forward without the jury ever leaving the room! How strange can this be?

The crux of all this is that the scientific community needs to have a dead body before it recognizes a new species of animal. This is a long held practice that goes back to the early days of scientific research, back when people, hundreds of years ago, were telling tales of all sorts of beasts, with nary a one of those ever having even a smidgen of reality connected to it. Regardless, everyone was sworn to be real and they were duly accepted as such. Gargoyles, griffins, mermaids, boogie men, all were fairy tales made up to either scare or be scared of. Telekinesis: How to Move an Object with Your Mind

Telekinesis is the ability to move an object on the physical plane using only psychic power. Telekinesis is probably the least useful psychic power, but it's also the most exciting to develop. Moving an object without physical means can't be explained away as coincidence the way telepathy, clairvoyance, or mental influence sometimes can be. Coincidence can't make an object move!

How to Move an Object with Your Mind

1) Take an object that is small, light and place it on a surface that will cause as little friction or resistance as possible.

2) Clear your mind completely. You should have NO distractions whatsoever, and try not to let extrameous thoughts enter your mind, or you will lose your focus. Concentration is vital!

3) Visualize a "tunnel "between yourself and the object. You see only the object. Everything else is outside of the tunnel, and thus, outside of your view.

4) Now, imagine your mind's hands coming out and pulling the object in or pushing it away. Don't expect this to work the first time you try it. It might, but there is a greater chance it will not. Try, try again!

3 Basic Telekinesis Exercises

1) Dancing Candle Flame

Light a candle and place it on a table. Stare at the candle's flame. Do not think about anything. Clear the mind but keep the flame in front of you. Soon you should see only the flame - ot the table, not the candle, not the room and objects surrounding you, but just the flame. Next, imagine the flame is stretching upward, growing taller, brighter. You can put your hand above it and imagine you are drawing the flame upward. Imagine the flame shrinks, becoming smaller and shorter. Imagine it flickers and dances. Imagine it bends.

2) Swinging on a String

Cut a piece of thread about 10 inches long. Tie a wide object to it, such as a needle or a toothpick. Hang the string so that you can sit comfortably in front of the hanging object. Sit far enough away from the string so that you know you aren't making the object spin with your breathing. Let the object come to a complete stop, not turning at all in midair.

Focus all your attention on one side of the object, right or left, it doesn't matter which. Imagine the object slowly turning as if your mind was really pushing against that side of it. You can use your fingers to "point" your energy, but do not touch the object. Once it starts to turn, and who knows how long it will take you to get this far, imagine that your energy pushes it faster so it speeds up. It should turn with greater momentum.

3) Floating Toothpick

Fill a clear glass bowl with fresh water. Drop a toothpick into the middle of the dish. Look at the toothpick. Imagine your mind's "hand" coming out and pushing on the object, and imagine it gliding across the water to the other side of the dish. Feel the energy pushing on it. You should begin to notice some movement after a while. You can use your hands to direct your energy, but don't touch or blow on the toothpick.

Once you have practiced this and you believe you have gotten the hang of it, take it one step further. Imagine that you are pushing down on the object, forcing it to go under the surface of the water. This will take more concentration, but the results are also more significant.

As you start down the road to developing telekinesis, it is important to keep in mind that no two people are exactly alike. The time it takes you to develop your telekinesis powers will vary from the time it takes other people. Your development could be faster or slower, and it will still be 100% perfect because it is what is right for you personally.

Blogger Anthony Braglia has discovered Annie Jacobsen's anonymous source for the latest Roswell theory. His identity does not lend credibility to the story, nor does Annie Jacobsen's prior reporting. I wonder why this story is emerging now so long after the end of the Cold War, and is it by accident or design?

In Annie Jacobsen's new book, "Area 51," she reports than an anonymous source told her that the Roswell Incident was actually perpetrated by the Soviet Union in order to mislead US intelligence. According to Jacobsen, the source told her that deformed children created by Nazi scientist Dr. Joseph Mengele had been used in a craft of unexplained design that had been crashed near the Roswell Army Air Field for reasons that are not clearly explained in the book. Also unexplained is how the Soviets could have penetrated so deeply into American airspace with a small aircraft described. At the time, only the largest long-range bombers had sufficient range.

Investigative journalist Annie Jacobsen presents a new theory of the Roswell incident in her book Area 51: An Uncensored History of America's Top Secret Military Base: a UFO did crash at Roswell, but it wasn't from outer space.

The world famous Roswell "incident" was no UFO but rather a Russian spacecraft with "grotesque, child-size aviators" developed in human experiments by Nazi doctor and war criminal Josef Mengele, according to a theory floated by investigative journalist Annie Jacobsen.

Her book, "Area 51: An Uncensored History of America's Top Secret Military Base," is about the secretive Nevada base called Area 51.
