Just the other day, I was talking to one of my students about divination and fortune-telling and they were super interested in what they can do to speed up the learning process. It seems that everyone wants to know if there are any fast or quick ways you can master the art of divining.
Get-spiritual-quick questions are always somewhat taboo. Of all industries, spirituality (and especially divination) seems to be on the forefront of the, “Takes years to learn” brigade. Students and seekers are often discouraged from asking questions and seeking help from teachers who believe that spiritual development can be achieved in any less than a million years time. Read more

Fire or Candle Scrying
You don't need a black mirror or crystal ball to scry. The flame of a candle can be used instead.
Fire Scrying is a very common method and requires only a flame of some sort. It's also one of the easiest methods as the flickering fire has a hypnotic effect. You can gaze into any fire - your lit fireplace, a bonfire, campfire, candle flame, or even a lighter.
When using candles, the type and color depends on what you are Scrying for. If doing spellwork, use the candle color, oils, herbs and sigils incorporated into the spell. Fire Scrying after spell casting adds a lot to the working energy by giving an added direction, understanding, and clarity. Read more

Can You Use Playing Cards to Read Tarot?
You don't need a special deck of tarot cards to perform divination—a deck of ordinary playing cards will suffice. I'm a professional tarot reader, but when I don't have a tarot deck with me, I might use a deck of playing cards to provide a useful reading.
A regular tarot deck has an extra set of cards called the Major Arcana that give extra depth and power to the meaning of the spread (layout of the cards). These qualities will obviously be missing when reading with playing cards, but you can still gain some insight. Read more

Which Divination Method Is Right for You?
Which divination method is right for you? Here are five you should consider.
Divination is one of the most-practiced branches of magick. Even non-magickal folks will sometimes flip a coin to make a decision, or crack open a fortune cookie with more than idle curiosity. As a student of the magickal arts, it's likely that you dabbled in divination as one of your first forays into the Mysteries. Skillful divination puts you in touch with both your inner knowing and external wisdom that will help you along your path.
But many beginners ask the question, Where do I start? How do I navigate the maze of stones and bones and cards and tea leaves and other options confronting me? In this article, I'll discuss five common methods of divination: Pendulums, scrying, Runes, Tarot, and freestyle reading. I'll then put on my Professor Trelawney glasses and peer into your soul to recommend the best method for you. Each recommendation is based on your skills and proclivities--and just for fun, your star sign. Read more

Simple Water Scrying
This is how to do simple water scrying using a black bowl. It is a very basic method of divination. You don't need to have a black bowl. If you use a white or light-colored bowl, add in some blue dye or black ink. This just aids in getting a better reflection on the water for a good reading.

Ask a Wizard: Divination and Why It Works
A real wizard explains what divination is and why it works.
When you next roll a pair of dice, turn a Tarot card, play the lottery or read the I Chiing, consider this: How do you know that the game in question isn’t rigged?
Divination systems work by simply removing the element of the seeker’s consciousness from the equation. We are presented with a randomized collection of symbolic data instead of suppositions, decisions, hopes, fears and other distractions. By eliminating expectation, we awaken the unconscious factors. These will vary based upon the individual, and it is useful to learn about the ancient systems of personality categorization. More modern systems like the DSM-IV-TR and related psychologically-based arrangements are heavily loaded with judgment and bias. The elder arts are human in origin and will have similar faults. Understanding a multitude of these systems is essential to the successful diviner Read more

Dowsing Competition Pits Believers against Skeptics
Dowsers who claim to be able to locate archaeological features from maps are invited to enter a specially devised competition. Most challenges issued by paranormal "skeptics" are rigged in favor of the skeptic, but this one seems as if it might be fair.
Mention the word dowsing and most people will think of a chap in muddy wellies trudging around a farm with a stick, looking for a good place to sink a borehole, or a fey type in a tie-dye T-shirt wafting about looking for mystical ley lines.
For centuries there have been believers in dowsing, a form of divination traditionally used to locate groundwater sources, and argument rages in the archaeological community about whether dowsers, armed with no more than a bit of bent copper wire and the power of faith, can also locate long-vanished Roman roads, Bronze Age barrows or prehistoric rock carvings.
However, even believers in the muddy wellies type of dowsing often have grave doubts about map dowsers, who claim to be able to locate such features just by holding a pendulum over a Google Earth satellite view taken from miles above a site. The debate has rumbled on through many archaeology forums, with believers and sceptics equally passionately engaged.
A website dedicated to prehistoric archaeology called the Megalithic Portal is now launching a competition to try and resolve the question, with would-be psychics and scoffers invited to join a hunt for archaeological remains from the comfort of their own armchairs. Read more

Automatic Writing: Communication from the Spirits?
The Haunted Museum explores automatic writing. Is it communication from the spirits? To learn how to do it yourself, read my post Automatic Writing for Divination.
Since the early days of Spiritualism, automatic writing has been accepted as a way for trance mediums, and sometimes ordinary people, to receive communications from the spirit world. Man has always longed to communicate with the spirits and thanks to the founding of the Spiritualist movement, he now had a method of doing so. The original communications, like those of the Fox Sisters in Hydesville, were little more than knocks and raps that spelled out long and elaborate methods. Most became frustrated by such slow methods of communication and began looking for something faster -- and much more direct. Not long after, the art of "automatic writing" was born.
Automatic writing is essentially writing that is done in an altered state of consciousness that is attributed to spirits of the dead. It is believed by some that the spirits literally manipulate the writing utensil in the hands of the medium to communicate, as the writer is often unaware of what is being written and often even scrawls out text in handwriting that is markedly different than his own. Using Automatic Writing for Divination
In automatic writing, a spirit brings messages through by using a pen or pencil or even a computer keyboard. Some automatic writers know who is giving the messages while other do not. Often people do not recognize their own handwriting. Sometimes the messages come in foreign languages. Some literary works have been written through automatic writing. Almost anyone can do automatic writing.
Getting Started
Get into a comfortable position. Be sure you are free of distractions. If you are not alone, tell others that you have some personal correspondence to take care of. If you are tired, this could actually work better for you. Now clear your mind of chatter. Feel the muscles in your body... neck... arms...shoulders... especially your face... totally relaxed . . . You are going to use paper and pen or your computer keyboard to talk to your guide. Know that whatever the answer is to your questions will be written by the spirit. Do not allow time for your mind to listen to this information. Just write or type. You may even want to focus your eyes on something nearby, which keeps the left brain busy while the right brain does the writing. It may seem like your own thoughts at first, but that is OK. It will get easier and quicker with practice.
When you are ready to start, gently place the pen on the paper in writing position or your fingers on the keyboard. You are relaxed and not concerned about what you will write. Write or type today's date at the top of your page. Mentally call one of your guides and tell him / her you want to communicate through writing. Tell them you can only work with one guide at a time. You may select the guide, or perhaps it is their choice. Not all guides can use automatic writing to communicate.
On the first day, you must get to know who your guide is. Write or type, "Hello. What is your name?" Follow with questions about the spirit guide and his/her relationship with you. I would suggest you start with simple questions that can be answered with a yes or no answer. Don't stop to think. Just allow yourself to write the answer. This is a time to get to know your guide and why he / she is working with you at this time.
After a few minutes, you will find yourself writing more quickly. There may be mistakes in punctuation--no space between words, poor grammar, unknown words--whatever. This is not important. Just keep writing questions and answers. Do not write too much on the first day. Just start slowly and feel comfortable.
You can begin again whenever you like. There are no schedule requirements. Each session will make you more comfortable. On the second day, you can ask questions that are beyond yes or no answers and get more details. I would suggest you not ask about your love life until you are comfortable with the spirit and this form of mediumship. This is much easier when the questions are not about you. Ask the spirit (you should now have a name) about your spiritual work, relationship with the guide, or other spiritual questions.
On the third day, ask about politics, economics, earth changes, and other global matters.
On the fourth day, you can begin to ask personal questions, but remember you can only ask a question once. Asking a question over and over again until you write your desired answer is wrong.
Example: "Does __________ love me?"
If the answer is no, so be it!
Change the question to: "Will I find a true love? Marry? etc."
The more you use automatic writing , the easier and faster it gets. Remember to save your notes. Caution: do not speak with unknown or evil spirits. If you want to talk with any spirit get the permission from your personal spirit guide. If the energies feel comfortable to you then you will soon learn who is controlling the writing and why he/she is writing with you. If you feel uncomfortable with the entity or the information received, stop! If you feel that more than one entity is trying to write through you, ask them to take their time, and you will write with them one at a time. Always try to get a name.
Finally, test to see if the information you are given is correct. Being in spirit, does not automatically bring knowledge or wisdom, especially about strictly material world concerns. Don't blame the spirits if you follow their advice to invest your entire 401K in North Korean rice futures, and you lose money. It is up to you to verify the information you are given, and, most importantly, it is up to you to decide whether you will act on it.
