 Fervent materialists like Neil deGrasse Tyson and Bill Nye are going to be outraged by this: some scientists now believe that the universe itself may be conscious.

You don’t have to look far to find outlandish theories on the nature of the cosmos and human consciousness. These days, notions once relegated to science fiction are finding their way into esoteric academic journals, and from there, into mainstream discourse. One example of this is the Simulation Argument, recently championed by Elon Musk; another is ‘time crystals,’ a tantalizing non-linear phase of matter. Is Consciousness Connected to the Fine Structure of the Universe?

Here's an interesting interview by Deepak Chopra with Dr. Stuart Hameroff of the Center for Consciousness Studies of the University of Arizona who proposes that consciousness arises at the quantum level with infrastructures inside neurons known as microtubules. These ideas might have implications for many aspects of what we call the paranormal.

On March 27 I interviewed Dr. Stuart Hameroff of the Center for Consciousness Studies of the University of Arizona. Here is an edited transcript of that interview.

DEEPAK: It's my pleasure today to interview Dr. Stuart Hameroff who is a Professor Emeritus at the Department of Anesthesiology and Psychology and the Director of the Center for Consciousness Studies at the University of Arizona. Dr. Hameroff is best known for his research on quantum consciousness, an alternative to the accepted view that consciousness emerges from complex computation. Dr. Hameroff in conjunction with noted Oxford physicist Sir Roger Penrose, who was Stephen Hawking's thesis advisor, has proposed that consciousness arises at the quantum level with infrastructures inside neurons known as microtubules.
